You have a number of special search keys with which you can search for a specific subject, publication or author.

1.  Search by people

People are indexed according to their 'last name,initials' or by 'last name,first name' (without a space after the comma). For example: Johnson,A or Johnson,Alfred. If you type in a name without a comma followed by the initials or first name, all people with that surname will be displayed. However, if you type in a name with a comma followed by the initials or first name, only people with names identical to that typed in will be displayed. Naturally, you can use wildcards here as well.

2.  Search by year of publication

If you are searching for publications by a particular author and you wish to limit the search results to a specific year of publication, you can modify the search operation by using the following search keys. You can search by year of publication using the following operators (the search engine does not include serials in the search results):

	AND JVU 1980		published in 1980
	AND JVU < 1980		published in or before 1980
	AND JVU > 1980		published in or after 1980
	AND JVU 1980-1984		published between 1980 and 1984, including 1980 and 1984

3.  Overview of special search keys

Enter the following special search keys for the search term:

• Search by All words (XALL) : XALL
  Enter XALL before the search term if you want to search different parts simultaneously, such as title, keyword and summary.
  Example: xall albania; xall clinton foreign policy
• Search by Keywords and subjects (XTHM) : XTHM
  Subject headings and keywords of the title in any order.
• Search by Subjects (XSLW) : XSLW
  Subject headings in any order.
• Search by Basic classification (XBKL) : XBKL
  To search for publications about a specific scientific subject using the basic classification. If you do not have this classification, it is preferable to search via the list of subjects.
• Search by Table of contents (XTXT) : XTXT
  Index of contents.
• Search by Person, Author (XPRS) : XPRS
  Enter XPRS before the last name, possibly followed by first name, initials and prefixes of the person you are searching for. The search key XPRS applies both for the person who has written a publication as well as for the name of printer.
  Example: xprs smith, william
• Search by Keywords of titles (XTIT) : XTIT
  Enter XTIT before the search term if you want to search the titles of books, magazines, conference proceedings or magazine articles or other material.
  Example: xtit american culture
• Search by Beginning of a title (XTPR) : XTPR
  Enter XTPR if you want to search for title as string (word by word in exact order).
• Search by Beginning of a periodical/ serial title (XZTI) : XZTI
  Beginning of the title of journals or series as a string, that is, word for word in exact sequence.
• Search by Keywords of a periodical/ serial title (XSER) : XSER
  Enter XSER before the search term if you want to search magazine titles.
  Example: xser british medical journal
• Search by Publication place, publisher, printer (XVER) : XVER
  Enter XVER before the search term to find keywords of place and publisher names.
  Example: xver paris barbin
• Search by Conference (XKON) : XKON
  Enter XKON before the congress name if you are searching for a specific conference. Note: use quotation marks to search for a literal text.
• Search by Corporate body, institution (XKOR) : XKOR
  To find titles which have been published by a specific organization.
  Example:xkor european union
• Search by Publication year (XJAH) : XJAH
  Enter XJAH before the search term to find a title which has been published in a specific year.
  Example: xjah 1798
• Search by Any number (XNUM) : XNUM
  Enter XNUM before the ISBN or ISSN number for a specific publication.
• Search by Shelfmark (XSGB) : XSGB
  Special and spaces of the command of the shelf mark are not taken into account.
• Search by Provenance (XPRN) : XPRN
  Origin of old prints.
• Search by Corporation (string) (XKSK) : XKSK
  Enter XKSK before the search term(s) to searched for publications published by a specific organization.
  Example: xksk european union
• Search by Conference (string) (XKNS) : XKNS
  Congress name (exact order)
• Search by ISBN (XISB) : XISB
  Enter XISB before the ISBN number if you have the International Standard Book Number for a specific publication.
• Search by ISSN (XISS) : XISS
  Enter XISS before the ISS number if you have the International Standard Serial Number for a specific periodical
• Search by LoC-number (XLCN) : XLCN
  If you know the LC card number.
• Search by Identification number (XPPN) : XPPN
  Enter XPPN before the Pica production number if you have the production number for a specific publication.
• Search by DDC-Notation (Title) (XLCC) : XLCC
  With this search key XLCC notations of "Library of Congress Classification" can be found.
• Search by NLM-number (XNLM) : XNLM
  With the search key XNLM can be searched for notations from the classification of the National Library of Medicine.
• Search by Mathematics Subjects Classification (XMSC) : XMSC
  For internal purposes.
• Search by Local systematic code (XLSY) : XLSY
  Enter XLSY before the systematic code if you have the systematic code for a specific publication. You can also scan the index for an overview of the codes (scan systematic code).
• Search by Keywords (XSW) : XSW
  Enter XSW before the search term if you want to search for subject headings which have been added to the titles.
  Example: xsw europees parlement or xsw franse revolutie
• Search by Local subject heading (XLSW) : XLSW
  Enter XLSW before the search term if you are searching with keywords added to the titles.
  Example: xlsw european parliament
• Search by Date (XDTM) : XDTM
  Enter XDTM before the search term to find a title which has been published in a specific year.
  Example: xdtm 19481018; xdtm 1948*
• Search by Title key 4/2/2/1 (XTSL) : XTSL
  If you know the title-key.
• Search by Subject headings (XSP) : XSP
  Subject headings in exact sequence.
• Search by DB-number (XDBN) : XDBN
  If you know the DB number.
• Search by Language (XSPR) : XSPR
  Enter XSPR before the language code.
• Search by Place of publication (XVLO) : XVLO
  Enter XVLO before the search term to find a title which has been published in a specific town.
  Example: xvlo amsterdam
• Search by Author/title key (4/4) (XATS) : XATS
  Type the first 4 letters of the author's surname and the first 4 letters of the first word of the title.
  Omit definite and indefinite articles, do not omit prepositions. If a word consists of less than 4 letters then fill with blanks.
  Example: xats hemifare; xats hemifor
• Search by Person/author (keywords) (XGPK) : XGPK
  Enter XGPK before the last name, possibly followed by first name, initials and prefixes of the person you are looking for.
  Example: xgpk ericson; xgpk smith,william
• Search by Person/author (XPER) : XPER
  Enter XPER before the last name, possibly followed by first name, initials and prefixes if you are searching for a specific author.
  Example: xper ericson; xper smith,william (to find all versions of the first name you can follow the first letter by a ?).
• Search by Person as a keyword (XPSW) : XPSW
  Included because of GND-project. Categories 100, 400 and 700 are indexed (authority records).
• Search by Date of change (XAED) : XAED
  Date modified.
• Search by Publisher (XVLG) : XVLG
  With the search key XVLG can be searched for keywords, which are contained in the information about the publisher.
• Search by URL (XURL) : XURL
  With the search key XURL, all characters have to be omitted.
• Search by ZDB number (XZDB) : XZDB
  ZDB-Number. For internal purposes.
• Search by LCD (XLCD) : XLCD
  With the search key XLCD can be searched for country codes in title data.
• Search by Thesis note (XHSS) : XHSS
  With the search key XHSS can be searched for the individual components of the university publication note (category 4204) in any order.
• Search by Codes (XCOD) : XCOD
  Only for internal purposes.
• Search by Person, author (keyword) (XPST) : XPST
  Enter XPST before the search term if you want to search name of involved person.
  Example: xpst appel
• Search by Special location (XSST) : XSST
  For internal purposes. Category 71XX is indexed (the part between the exclamation marks).
• Search by Local IDN (XLNR) : XLNR
  Local numbers.
• Search by Shelf mark with spaces (XSGN) : XSGN
  Shelf mark with blanks.
• Search by RVK-notation (XRVK) : XRVK
  With the search key XRVK notations of the Regensburg Classification can be found.
• Search by Other notation (XSYS) : XSYS
  Enter XSYS before the systematic code, if you know the systematic code of the publication, which you are looking for.
• Search by Sachgruppen DNB bis 2003 (XSGR) : XSGR
  With the search key XSGR can be searched for the functional group in the title data of DB. For internal purposes.
  Example: xsgr 51; xsgr 48 and 51
• Search by Sachgruppen DNB ab 2004 (XSGD) : XSGD
  With the search key DDC groups in the data of the Deutsche Bibliothek will be searched, used since 2004 to outline the DNB. If several functional groups are sought, you have to use operator "and".

• Search by Date of change (copy) (XAEE) : XAEE
  Date modified (copy).
• Search by Pica-ID-number (copy) (XEPN) : XEPN
  For internal purposes. If you know the Copy-production-number.
• Search by New acquisitions (XNEL) : XNEL
  For internal purposes; code of new acquisitions.
• Search by New acquisitions - department (XNEA) : XNEA
  For internal purposes; new acquisitions.

  If you know the MCN-number.
• Search by Target group (kw) (XZGW) : XZGW
  Dutch language Brinkman keywords are added to the titles. Enter XZGW before the Brinkman keyword by which you want to search.
• Search by Main title (phrase) (XHTP) : XHTP
  Enter XHTP before the title phrase which you want to search.
• Search by Werktitel (phrase) (XWTP) : XWTP
  Enter XWTP before the magazine title and sub-title you are looking for. Omit articles at the beginning of the title. If you scan the entire title, you will get an overview of all magazines.
  Example: xwtp international journal of politics, culture and society
• Search by Fingerprint (phrase) (XFPR) : XFPR
  Enter XFPR before the search term to search for the fingerprint. Type the individual parts of the fingerprint exact.
• Search by Selection key (XSLS) : XSLS
  For internal purposes. Category 70XX is indexed.
• Search by Generic terms DNB (XGAD) : XGAD
  For internal purposes. Categorie 5025 is indexed (word by word).
• Search by Person GND (XPNE) : XPNE
  Included because of GND-project. Categories 100, 200 and 700 are indexed (authority records).
• Search by SSG-number/FID-code (XSFK) : XSFK
  With the search key XSFK can be searched for the numbers of Special Collections.
• Search by DDC syntetic (XSDC) : XSDC
  With the search key XSDC can be searched for notation of the Dewey Decimal Classification in authority records. Points within the notation can be omitted.
• Search by Provenances (keyword) (XPRK) : XPRK
  Origin of old prints.
• Search by Subject headings (XSWW) : XSWW
  Subject headings that describe the contents of the title as a string, that is, word for word in exact sequence.
• Search by Journal title (XZET) : XZET
  For internal purposes.
• Search by Publisher, publishing place, printer (phrase) (XPUS) : XPUS
  Publisher and place of publication as a string and additionally publisher and place of publication separately.
• Search by Shelf mark (XSGC) : XSGC
  Letters and numbers which indicate the location of a book in the library. Blanks and special characters can be omitted.
• Search by Congress (XVDL) : XVDL
  For internal purposes.
• Search by Date and selection key (XSLK) : XSLK
  For internal purposes. Category 70XX is indexed: the first point of the selection key and the date in the form 2003-06-13.
• Search by Any number (XSNR) : XSNR
  For internal purposes.
• Search by GND-number (XNID) : XNID
  Included because of GND-project. Categories 035 and 039 are indexed (authority records).
• Search by Access number (XZNM) : XZNM
  For internal purposes. Category 81XX is indexed.
• Search by Barcode (XBAR) : XBAR

• Search by Series (phrase) (XRTI) : XRTI
  With the search key XRTI can be searched for volumes of series. Your search must be a substring, that is, word for word in exact sequence.
• Search by Series (keyword) (XVSE) : XVSE
  With the search key XVSE can be searched for volumes of series.
• Search by Series, journal (keyword) (XSHA) : XSHA
  Keywords from the series and magazine titles in any order.
• Search by Title beginning series, journal (XGTI) : XGTI
  Enter XGTI before the magazine title and sub-title you are looking for. Omit articles at the beginning of the title. If you scan the entire title, you will get an overview of all magazines.
  Example: xgti international journal of politics, culture and society
• Search by Title (phrase) (XMTI) : XMTI
  With the search key XMTI, you can search volumes of a multivolume work, using a phrase search for the overall title.
• Search by Duplicate number (XDNR) : XDNR
  For internal purposes.
• Search by Classification DDB (XSN) : XSN
  For internal purposes.
• Search by Remark (copy) (XEXK) : XEXK
  For internal purposes. The categories: 4801 and 4802 are indexed.
• Search by Notes (music) (XFNM) : XFNM
  The categories: 4201, 4202, 4221, 4222, 4223 and 4226 are indexed (word by word), if the work is a music work.
• Search by Material code (XBBG) : XBBG
  For internal purposes. The category 0500 is indexed.
• Search by URL (full text) (XUUU) : XUUU
  URL for the full-text index.
• Search by Abrufzeichen (XABR) : XABR
  Only for internal purposes. The category 86XX is indexed.
• Search by Series title (keyword) (XTMB) : XTMB
  With the search key XTMB, you can search volumes of a multivolume work, using a keyword search for the overall title.
• Search by Loan indicator (XAUI) : XAUI

  Enter the type of publication for which you are searching. Only publications that satisfy the material code will be selected. You can only use the material code in combination with another search key.
