Abstract: | In historiography and in the collective imagination, the image of the close-knit family, traceable in Southern Europe, as opposed to the 'weak' family, widespread in Northern Europe, has long resisted. In recent years, however, many new perspectives have opened up in the field of historical research on the family in the Early Modern Age. They have helped to shift the focus from the complementarity of sex roles and horizontal relationships within families to the disunity and tensions that ran through parental relationships in many other cases. The authors of the essays collected in this book consciously wanted to investigate the reasons for disputes, the more or less latent individual or generational contrasts within family groups, such as the tensions between parents and sons/daughters or between cadets and firstborn concerning political disputes or relating to the control and redistribution of family resources. These were conflicts generated by the will of individuals and their unconventional behaviour, the full extent of which is not lost on the emotional dimension of the cases, the language of feelings, the ever-present anxiety over the preservation of the name and heritage Se nella storiografia, come nell’immaginario collettivo, ha a lungo resistito e resiste l’immagine della famiglia ‘forte’ e coesa al suo interno, rintracciabile nel Sud Europa, in contrapposizione a quella della famiglia ‘debole’, diffusa nel Nord Europa, è anche vero che, negli ultimi anni, molte nuove prospettive si sono aperte nell’ambito della ricerca storica sulla famiglia di età moderna. Esse hanno contribuito a spostare l’attenzione dalla complementarità dei ruoli sessuali e delle relazioni orizzontali all’interno delle famiglie alle disunioni e le tensioni che in molti altri casi attraversarono le relazioni parentali. Le Autrici e gli Autori dei contributi raccolti nel libro hanno per l’appunto voluto consapevolmente indagare i motivi di disputa, i contrasti più o meno latenti, individuali o generazionali, interni ai gruppi familiari, come le tensioni tra genitori e figli/e o tra cadetti e primogenito in merito a contrapposizioni di natura politica o relativi al controllo e alla ridistribuzione delle risorse familiari. Si trattò di conflitti generati dalla volontà dei singoli e dei loro comportamenti anticonvenzionali di cui non si manca di cogliere tutta la portata della dimensione emotiva dei casi, il linguaggio dei sentimenti, l’assillo sempre presente della conservazione del nome e del patrimonio |
